Raised within a 60-mile radius surrounding Dalton, Georgia where most of the world’s carpeting is produced, Best Carpet Value CEO Anthony West practically grew up on the floor of his father’s carpet manufacturing facility. Anthony worked for his father in many capacities throughout high school and college, before earning his Bachelor’s degree in Business Management from Georgia College. Groomed for the business in which he and his Dad shared a passion, Anthony moved into a full-time sales and customer service position in 1985, and was later promoted to quality control and manufacturing where he learned both the art and science of fine carpet making.
Anthony has seen extensive changes in the carpeting industry over his 30 years in the business. Where most of those changes have been positive moves towards higher quality, faster production, and more affordable alternatives, some of the changes have been a mixed bag, presenting BCV with challenges they have summarily overcome under West’s leadership.
Finding Its Niche in a Competitive Marketplace
“When my father started his carpet manufacturing business, there were over 300 carpet mills in the United States,” West says. “Today there are less than 60 manufacturers, and only five or six that manage the majority of the sales. As any industry matures, it tends to consolidate, and that is particularly true of the carpeting business,” he continues. “For instance, there used to be a lot of small mills that thrived off yarn lots sold off the large manufacturers that often had excess inventory. Those small mills would then produce their own products and sell them, building their own brand. In addition, there were numerous suppliers that serviced smaller mills that were not fully integrated making it more cost effective and less capital intensive for start-up carpeting companies. Through acquisitions, a consolidation process began in the 1980s and ramped up again in the 1990s that drastically cut the number of these mills. Carpet recycling and reuse programs among larger mills further reduced manufacturers, and the result is fewer mills producing a more diverse line of flooring products.”
West opened Best Carpet Value on his own in 1999 with a traditional, well-established nationwide distribution and reseller network that ensured BCV flooring found its way into homes and offices nationwide. In 2008 he made the transition into online sales, which in spite of significant corporate restructuring and a huge leap of faith, has proven to be a highly successful move.
Fortunately, about that same time, carpet tiles, which made their modern debut in the 1970s but began to gain widespread popularity in the mid-1990s, completely changed the commercial carpeting industry. Shortly thereafter, Luxury Vinyl Tile (LVT) made its entrance into the flooring market as a hardwearing faux wood, stone, or ceramic hard floor option.
With West’s expertise in carpet production and his vision for where the market was heading, BCV carved out its niche among residential and commercial Do-it-Yourselfers (DIY), to specialize in carpet tiles and LVT, which are not just quick and easy to install, but cost effective.
In offices, institutions, and especially in the hospitality industries, carpet tiles make it easier and more affordable to replace worn carpet just in high traffic areas rather than replacing the entire carpet. Carpet tiles and LVT have become the vast majority of BCV sales!
Carpet tiles, LVT, as well as the addition of wood products have left BCV poised to face the fickle challenges and fashion trends that have always plagued the carpeting industry.
